If you pick your anchorage in an anchoring zone or in a spot that will
obviously get no traffic at night you don't need an anchor light. I like to
light mine if I hear nearby traffic, but most nights I have not used one, just
drains the battery and causes light polution. Though it is not CG approved a
kerosene lamp hung in the rigging works well, too. River gillnetters used to
use this method of lightring the end of their nets in the Puget Sound area.
