Tom,
I've come to a similar decision. My old kick-up rudder left a lot
to be desired. In anything over 10 kts there was considerable play in the
rudder. If it was tightened up, then it wouldn't raise. I have gone to
a solid rudder and take it off when needed. It doesn't seem to be any
more hassle to remove the rudder than to play with all the lines, and
sometimes boat hook, to lower the kick up kind.
I do beach the boat quite often. I usually store the rudder in the
cabin on the port side. I anchor from the bow and back up to the beach
where I set another anchor ashore. The boat sits in the water, usually
about knee deep, without tearing up the gel coat. Not that my boat
hasn't seen its share of beaches. The gel coat problem isn't why I don't
beach the boat. It's the wave action of the stink pots. The boat rides
the incoming waves a lot better in this configuration.
