The factory system does not stabilize the gin pole. Since it is through-bolted
to the mast, and the rear step pin secures the mast to the deck, there is
no need, and I have witnessed no unexpected sideways movement of the pole.

In light of the comments against using bungees in place of the mini stays,
I must retract my tentative endorsement of using bungees. I can see that
the elasticity of the bungees would be a Bad Thing(TM) when raising the mast.
