Tom,

I set up my P-15 with a topping lift for the boom. A 3/16 line is
attached to the end of the boom, runs through a small block at the top
of the mast, through a cheek block at the bottom of the mast and is
fastened to a cleat on the aft end of the cabin top.

Previously, I used a fixed piece of line between the top of the mast
and the end of the boom, but I kept forgetting to undo it after I
raised the sails and it was a real pain to undo and secure once
underway. The adjustable one is left attached to the boom all the
time.

Royce (Sailing Illustrated) claims that not using a boom support of
one sort or another causes premature stretching of the leech of the
sail, screwing up the shape of the airfoil.

Although the picture of my boat that sits on my desk would indicate
that I couldn't furl a sail to save my life, here's the way I've been
taught to do it: As you lower the sail, pull the first "fold" out and
hold it horizontal to "catch" the rest of the sail, attempting to get
it in kind of pleated (I think this is called "flaking"). Once the
sail is fully lowered, roll up the the piece that you've been holding
horizontal with the rest of the sail in it and fasten that to the
boom. It's simpler than it sounds here....

In answer to your question on reefing points, to double reef you would
need a second set of eyes and a second set of ties. Remember, on a
loose footed sail as is used on the Potters, the ties do NOT go around
the boom, they are just there to constrain the unused part of the
sail.

Hope this helps,

Hi

I'd like to know how to deal with this.

When I lower the mains'l The boom also lowers into the cockpit

If one is trying to Reef the sail, which I've yet to do, wouldn't
The boom get in the way. Would it be a good idea to run a wire from
the top of the mast to the rear of the boom to hold it horizontal
while the sail is down?

When stowing the Mains'l should I wrap it around the boom? Does
this increase the wear over much on the sail?

I have the jiffy reefing system which I've pobably rigged wrong.
How do I double reef this sail? Do I add eye-lets or sail ties?
Where would they go?
