Hello everyone:

In response to a question from Mike C. I measured the area taken in by the
first and second reefs on my mainsail.

Please note that the total area is based on literature from IM and the first
reef was installed by Odyssey Sails who manufacture the sails for IM. I
had the second reef put in by Genco Marine (Toronto). The location of
the second reef was suggested by Genco.

Here goes:

Total area - 83 square feet

1st reef tack is 29 inches up from the main tack. This reefs approximately
18 square feet of sail.

2nd reef tack is 61 inches up from the main tack. This reefs an
additional 18 square feet of sail.

Total area reefed with both reefs is 36 square feet.

Currently my sail inventory consists of the main, with two sets of reef
points and the standard jib. My reefing sequence is pretty simple and
seems to work.

1. 1st reef in the main

2. 2nd reef in the main

3. remove the jib

4. lower the main and run for cover (while wondering what the heck
possessed you to go out in the first place)

I hope that this is understandable.
