My P-15 came with a topping lift, and I leave it connected after I raise the
mainsail. I just put a bit of slack in it. Since I trailer my boat and
haven't spent any time on it with the mainsail down, it has been of minimal
use to me. I think it would be a lot handier if you would leave your boat
on the water overnight, because it supports the boom when the mainsail is
down. As soon as my mainsail is down, I flake it over the boom, secure to
the boom with 4 bungee cords, take off the boom, and then store the boom in
the cabin. As someone has already mentioned, it will just fit in the cabin
if you maneuver it into the chain locker. You don't need to remove the
mainsail from the boom. I use 4 bungee cords, which came with the boat, to
secure the mainsail to the boom, but they don't work well, and they are hard
to get apart.
