This sounds like what I've heard called a goose wing -the boom rising
during an accidental jibe. With a gaff rig the boom ends up on one side and
the gaff on the other. In any case I hear it isn't any fun.

The only refernaces to a scanalized main I've ever seen are to the practice
of dropping the peak of the gaff (of a gaff rigged sail) when sailing
before the wind, and, if further reduction is necessary, tieing up the tack
(not the clew) only if the peak has been first lowered.
