It's true that as long as the motor is running you are getting gas
and oil, but as the fuel level drops in the carb and gas starts to
run out, you begin to run "lean" on both gas and oil. The motor runs
leaner and leaner until it quits. I don't know whether this oil/fuel
starvation period is sufficient to cause damage, but you are not
getting full lube during the starvation process.
