I own a short rigged P19. I've sailed a few times with the standard rig
potters (Eric P begin one). Yes the boom is substantially longer it extents
out past the transom. The actual area of the main and jib are the same due
to the longer boom (for the main) and the fact that the short rig is mast
head rigged but the standard rig are factional. As I see it the pro/con are
as follows...

Con:
1) No easy way to rig a backstay which would be nice
2) slower in light winds. Even when I'm not dragging the dingy I have
trouble keeping up with the other guys.

Pro:
1) Short rig is even stiffer than the standard rig which I thing is great
for us new sailors with a family of 6 + dog. The crew don't get as nervous.
2) Because sail mass is closer to the water I can carry more sail in higher
winds, and still feel very safe and comfortable.

But of course free advice is worth what you paid for it...
