For many years I used the same fix as Geoff, making sure I
could get rid
of both plugs (Remy Martin corks) in a hurry in case I got
swamped. But since this year I got a slip I had to leave the
plugs out for rainwater to drain. So I ordered a repair kit
from IM: they sent me the wrong one first but very rapidely
(overnight mail) and very graciously (free) they sent me the
correct one.
Mine came in four parts (depends on the year of the boat).
The first thing I did was to install an Inspection Port
(Beckson DP60BW) at the end of the cockpit seat, it comes
with a storage bag and I find it still very useful.
Then I removed the old (leaking) drain. (Point of no return)
I installed the outer hull piece first using 3M 5200
SEALANT.
The next step was the hardest: there is a piece that slides
onto the first one (from the inside) to hold it against the
hull, they have offset grooves so it does not slide out. I
had waited a whole day for the first piece to set but that
was not enough (it was not the fast cure stuff) and as I
slid the inside piece in the outside started to come off , I
yelled for my first (and only) mate to come help and between
the two of us we managed to jam the two pieces together,
with much sealant to make sure they stayed that way and did
not leak. Then I slid the piece of hose thru the cockpit
hole onto the first piece and finally the last piece from
the cockpit onto the hose. It was not a fun job. Once you
have the inspection port in you might try to liberally apply
sealant around the old tube, it might be enough. Anyway it
worked and although I had plenty rainwater in the cockpit
all summer it drained fine and the bilge remained dry. The
only problem I had was that since up to now I had been
trailering and keeping Kirolou in the garage I had not
thought about antifouling paint and it did not take long for
these little buggers (barnacles and hairy growth) to cover
the hull. Oh well, live and learn.
