Hi

Tis the season-- The boats are out of the water, the docks have been
pulled in, and the water is cold! Some of us are already getting
punchy...

I'd like to suggest some books, as follows:

Hugo Vihlen _The Stormy Voyage of FATHER'S DAY Marlor Press, St.
Paul, Minnesota. ISBN 0 943400 91 0 $16.95

"On June 14, 1993, Hugo Vihlen set out alone to
cross the
North Atlantic Ocean to England in a homebuilt
sailboat
measuring only five feet, four inches long."

Marlin Bree _Call of The North Wind_ Marlor Press, St. Paul,
Minnesota.
ISBN 0 943400 90 2 $16.95

"In his small sailboat and a catamaran, the
author retraces
voyages of lost ships, early explorers, and
heroic sea
captains.

His richly personal nrrative tells of true
sailing adventures
and mysteries on Lake Superior as he sails
eastward out
of the Apostle Islands and along Michigan's
Shipwreck
Coast into Canada..."

Marlin Bree _In The Teeth of The Northeaster_ Marlor Press, St. Paul,
Minnesota. ISBN 0 943400 72 4 $14.95

"For one summer, the author sailed alone on Lake
Superior
in a 20-foot wooden sailboat he built in his
back yard. His
journey has been called _Blue Highways_ by boat.

He writes about kind-hearted waterfront people,
early
voyageurs, shipwrecks, storms, gold, and an
island of
silver that was once the world's richest mine."

Marlor Press (not exactly first in size among the country's publishing
houses) has an 800 number--800-669-4908.

Philip Teece _A Dream of Islands_ Orca Book Publishers, PO Box 5626,
Stn. B, Victoria, B. C., Canada. ISBN 0 920501
20 6 (I think that it was about $15)

"...chronicles the author's twenty-year odyssey
amongst
the channels, straits, bays and coves of the Gulf
Islands in
Georgia Strait off the British Columbia Coast...

Sailing single-handed and without the aid of an
engine, Teece has examined every nook
and cranny of his home
waters, in the process proving that you don't
have to head
for the open seas to find excitement and
adventure afloat."

They're all worth reading, but I like Teece best, and so on in reverse
order.
