IMHO:

You will never remove the name completely off. With age the surrounding gel
coat has gotten darker or lighter than area covered by the name.

If it is paint, you can use a paint remover. But the shadow will remain... To
cover shadow you will have to "paint" with gel coat. Any halfway decent gel
coat expert (specialist) can fix it...

The optimal solution is to cover the dang thing with a skinny pretty piece of
wood or vinyl and imprint a new name on that. assuming you don't want to pay
the gel coat dude the 200 bucks to fix it...

In a message bblohm@boi.hp.com (Bill Blohm) write:

It appears that this name is painted on. It's definitely not
vinyl or some such pressed on material.

1) What can I use next?

2) If I MUST scrape it off, as is starting to appear inevitable,
how can/should I restore the gel coat in that area?
