Bryan . . . . I have a very good friend that took his 15 down to the Sea of
Cortez for a month every year and never had a bit of a hassle. He mainly
used it to take he and his wife out to one of the islands and set up a camp
there. Then they would take off from there and spend a day or two here and
there. Once they set up camp, the boat was empty enough for them to spend
the night at another location in the boat. I think the biggest problem
with cruising in the 15 is just a matter of how much you can carry with you
and still be safe in doing so. The boat can and will handle much more than
we mere mortals can. I would have no reservations about cruising around in
Baja in a 15, mainly 'cuz I'm alone and storage is not the problem for me
that it would be for a couple. But then again, way back when, my wife
(back when I had one of them) and I spent a week on our WWP14 without ever
going ashore, one does learn to adapt . . . . . The conditions in L.A. Bay
can and do get gnarly real quick, but if you are caught out on the water
when a blow comes along, you are really never more than a couple miles from
shore or an island to duck behind, the weather comes up quick, but you
usually have a pretty good warning before it does. One of them main
limitations, I think, would be your water storage capacity, I have always
had access to a pur RO watermaker, and could pump out about a gallon of
nice fresh water per hour with relatively litte effort. I have one of those
units on my shopping list. Myself, I would not hesitate to sail the Sea of
Cortez in a 15 foot Potter, but that's me . . . . . . .
