The 3.5HP uses a shear pin. I understand there is now a stainless steel shear
pin upgrade on Tohatsu/Nissan/Merc/Mariner 3.X HP motors.

The 5HP does not use a shear pin.

I use an 8HP Nissan (60 lbs., FNR = Forward/Neutral/Reverse) with alternator
to keep battery (series 27 , 45 lbs. (125AMP)) charged while sailing.
Sometimes, I wish I had purchased the Nissan 5HP at 45 lbs... But not while
going in and out inlet to the ocean.

When I sail in my canal only, I use a Minn Kota Endura 50 electric motor
attached to a series 27 - 205 min reserve capacity battery. I get one and one
half hour use at full power and about another half hour at half power.

If you do not have to contend with a busy inlet to ocean with fierce currents
I would recommend the Nissan/Tohatsu 5HP with external fuel tank and FNR at 45
lbs. A 60 lbs. motor feels like 100 lbs at end of day... Nissan/Tohatsu
also have a 5HP (50 lbs. I think) 4cycle motor available for $1,195.00 on
sale. Single cylinder 3.5 and 5 HP engines shake a lot while the 2 cylinder
8HP is pretty smooth... 4 cycle 5HP outboards seem to shake quite a bit more
than the 2 cycle ones I've seen. However, the oil slick behind outboard is
much smaller so you don't have to clean transom so often...

If you sail on a lake an Evinrude 4HP Yachttwin (twin cylinder) with
alternator and FNR is a good bet. It was the motor most liked in my survey for
P15 owners. The twin cylinders makes it run quietly and smoothly. It can be
found for less than $1,000 for left over models... Check the Boat Trader...

If it is not regularly very windy on lake (15 + MPH) and you use outboard only
to get away from dock you might consider a Minn Kota Endura 50 (25 Lbs. ) with
44" shaft attached to a series 27- 205min reserve battery... It will push you
about 4 - 5 MPH against a 6MPH wind for 1 1/2 hours flat out and has FNR
gears. You can mount it on a peg attached to the rudder like a Dovekie or on
outboard bracket.

If not for the inlet and the fierce wind and tidal currents (see November 98
Cruising World page 33 for pic of my "Hillsboro Inlet" which they wrongly
claim is Ft Loud) I would be happy with just the Endura 50...

My 8HP Nissan is quieter than a 9.9 Evinrude or a 3.3(5) T/N/M/M outboard and
a lot smoother... It barely shakes... I use it at Start position all the time
and floor it only to get through inlet. The Minn Kota Endura 50 makes no noise
and no vibration at all... I use it flat out most of the time... the Minn Kota
is as quiet as sailing...

Which motor to use is a tough decision with many compromises bases on your
area of sailing. You will also have to consider the many consequences if you
pick the wrong one...

Good Luck

BTW: At the current price for labor and parts I strongly recommend the
Manufaturer's extended warranty on any engine you purchase. (makes it easier
to sell after a while...) After the 3rd. year you'll be glad you paid for
it...

<< Subj: New Motor... recommendations?

Things are starting to come together on the short-rigged 19
I am restoring. I have found a nice used main sail and have
tubing lined up to make a new (longer) boom. Problem solved
--- with the assistance and encouragement of all you
Potterers on the list! Thanks...

Now I have to choose a new motor and you guys got me all
flustered with the shear pin panic...

I had been considering a Tohatsu, but don't know if I can
afford the shear pins (Grin). I suspect that there a lot of
well behaving Tohatsus out there -- we just don't hear about
them. How about some encouraging comments about motors and
some recommendations -- I plan to buy new and am considering
either a 3.5 or 5hp (no shear pin!) Tohatsu or American look
alike..

Any comments, observations or recommendations? ---Tohatsu
or otherwise. Are the Tohatsu's reasonably quiet?
