Eric,

> Can the factory unit be used under sail?

Yes, providing you make sure you get the mainsail all the way UP.
Even then, the boom can drag on the Bimini top under light winds
(other rigs might differ, we have an early '98 with the factory installed
Bimini). We have been sailing with the Bimini now for about a year.

> Is it easy to erect and remove?

Our factory Bimini attaches with four straps (two on each side)
and a pole/support ribs that has a single attachment on each
side of the boat. The whole thing folds forward and can be tied down
if you want to leave it on the boat. The pole attachments have a single
spring loaded pin so all you have to do is align the base of the pole and
slide the pin in (best done with two people, but can be done by one)
then attach the four straps. You can also get the cover to make a
neat package.

Outside of the tendency for the boom to rub the top of the Bimini
under certain conditions, am most happy with the factory unit. Good
quality and quite durable. In this area, a Bimini top ranks right up
there with the CDI as a "must have" option, especially for those
with fair skin and not too much hair cover on top...

BTW, assume IM's offer includes the hardware attachments for the
straps and support pole, but best to double check...
