They DO need to be secured so they can't shift if the boat lays over on its
side. I'm thinking of using some industrial strength webbing straps attached
with panhead machine screws and washers to the underside of the horizontal
surface of the v-berth as far outboard as I can get them.

But maybe I'll come up with another idea... right now I'm just brainstorming
the "big picture". I'm sure it will change as I work out the details.
