My thoughts on this aren't to build an electric outboard but instead to use
an existing Minn Kota product and mount it to the rudder so that when in
use, it slides down and when not, it slide up just clear of the water. The
issues of the motor standing up in the air would have to be overcome for
potential sheet hangups and whatnot (especially if you use a 36" shaft or
longer), but this idea certainly has merit. You'd free up one whole side
of the transom for some other neat boat project.
