Ed's boat is apparently a gunter rig like mine, which means he also has a
wooden mast and wooden gunter yard. The wooden boom has a groove for the
bolt rope in the gunter rig main. I find the wooden boom much easier to
work with than the aluminum boom on my lateen rig. It's easier to attach
things securely. And it does look nicer. Its gooseneck interfaces with the
track on the gunter mast. There wouldn't be much advantage to the aluminum
boom unless he wanted to change the whole rig to the modern version.
