Hi Potter Gang,

I recently looking into racing the P-19 on SF Bay this summer and received an
invitation to join the Berkeley Yacht Club's Friday night "Chowder Races".

In order to race, you have to have a PHRF rating. Since the P19 is under the
20 foot PHRF requirement, there is no official rating, but the Chowder Races
are informal, so you can submit an application to BYC and get an unofficial
rating.

I posted an inquiry on the 'net to find out if anybody knew what the rating is
for a P19 and here's what came back in the rec.boats.racing newsgroup.

>My 1996 Portsmouth Handicap Yardstick shows a D-PN of 105.5 for a West Wight
Potter 19 (centerboard class). Table V of the Yardstick gives the
relationship
of D-PN to PHRF. For 105.5, the PHRF = 303.

>Sounds reasonable. The first class to start in our Friday night races is
for boats rating 210 and slower. For a typical six mile course, you'll be
9.3 minutes behind the leaders, 6.9 minutes behind a Santana 22, 3.9
minutes behind a Cal-20.

You'll finish 8.5 minutes behind a Merit 25 or J-24 that starts five
minutes after you do, and only 5.0 minutes behind a Ranger 33 that starts
ten minutes after your start.

So, if you're quick about getting the boat tied to the guest dock and
furling the sails, you'll be back at the bar before it even gets busy.
That is, if the rating is accurate and you're sailing as well as the rest
of the fleet.
