Gang,

Although I'm not a fisherman, how could I go wrong in buying a used old
book on fishing from the library for fifty cents?

They described a " brush anchor " ! This is a " anchor " made from a
medium sized carpenter's spring clamp ! You pull up close to the shore
and clamp on to some twigs on the bushes and let the nylon rode make you
fast for a lunch stop. I tried making one from an old jumper cable clamp
but the spring was not strong enough to hold. I bought a genuine
carpenter's clamp and it works fine as long as there is not too much river
current and / or wind.
