I made a square bracket out of Plexiglas and mahogany (which when oiled w/
teak oil looks pretty close). It has a secure place to set my handheld VHF
and GPS so they can be viewed through the plexi glass. In addition the plexi
glass slides out the top of the enclosure and its large enough so that a
folded map or chart can be mounted beneath it. I mount this on the outside
of the cabin in the cockpit. Its beveled narrow at the bottom and wider (3
inches) at the top so that you can still lean back against it while sitting
in the cockpit facing aft. The whole thing cost around $15 and an afternoon
of "sculpting" in the wood shed.
