Thanks very much for the various useful responses I've received so
far, both in public and in private mail. Basically, there have been a
few endorsements but also two rather serious sounding hard-luck
stories about new Potters, enough to give me pause, since at the
distance where I'm at any problems would be much harder to rectify.
Meanwhile, Steve Barnes aka Old Surf Dude has gracefully opened up
the possibility of me buying his vintage Potter, complete with lateen
rig and all (and he seems to have opened up some floodgates of
recollection, too). I don't know yet whether the deal will come about,
but it's already more than I would have expected when I posted my
question.

Bruce Longstaff has kindly pointed me towards the (still under
construction) web site of the British manufacturer Pot Wight Marine
<http://www.keffen.freeserve.co.uk> who seem to offer a new "E"
version of the Potter, built with an FRP hull and wooden topsides.
The photo looks absolutely beautiful, and I intend to check out their
offering a bit more in detail if the used Potter deal does not come
about. I fear, though, that the price plus shipping from Europe may
exceed my limited budget (if I were still living in Germany, I might
even consider *sailing* it home, but not to Japan, no way).

Anyhow, this is a nice list.
