For those of you who wondered what lurked under those "lumps" aside the
centerboard trunk......

I used a tungsten carbide cutter on my Craftsman-clone-of-a-Dremel-tool to
remove a 2" (approx) circle from the center of each "lump". Prying out this
circle revealed.......

Foam. The beige colored foam-in-place type. And water, but not as much as I
expected. Someone here on the list had suggested that this type of foam would
absorb water if left soaking long enough. This was not what I observed. The
foam seemed light and relatively dry but where I removed it revealed a puddle
underneath.

Below the foam is what you might expect. A 1/2" x 2 1/2" stainless steel bolt,
a flat washer on each side and a self-locking nut. There was no evidence of
any caulk or sealant used, but the witness marks under flat washer suggest
that the hardware may have been installed while the resin was still curing.

What concerns me now, on my boat, is that the fit between the bolt and the
holes in the CB trunk seems excessivly loose. I don't know if the holes were
too big to begin with, or if they have been enlarged by the CB and pivot
banging around. Maybe I'm just being too fussy?

I'm thinking of trying to fill in some of the excess clearance with epoxy -
Any suggestions?
