Has anybody tried using one of the in-line bulb pumps that are used
for priming an external tank system as a "refill" mechanism while
underway with an internal tank?

Derek:

My Seagull also does not accommodate an external tank. I have considered
the following solution, but haven't been motivated enough to try it, since
I use my motor as little as possible. But I could have used the system on
my recent 30-mile motorsail in the South Bay.

How about strapping an external tank on the forward deck and running a hose
or tubing back to the built-in tank on the motor, using gravity feed? That
also moves the weight forward, usually desirable. You would have to install
a fitting in the motor's tank for the fuel line. The vent on the motor's
tank would be kept closed, but the forward tank would have to be vented.

An additional advantage is that the tank is external, where ventilation is
not a problem, and it could be installed only when a lot of motoring is
anticipated. A possible disadvantage would be carrying the weight of the
fuel relatively high in the boat, which might have a slight negative
effect on stability.
