Hi John:
IMHO tapping screws are a lubberly way to do this. I recommend using the
appropriate size machine screw (probably oval head as most marine hardware
is countersunk for this profile) with an oversize (fender) washer and a
nyloc nut. If you run into a problem getting the nut started, you can
usually use some kind of stickum (bubble gum or folded masking tape are
examples of success stories) on the end of a dowel to position the nut and
washer. After the nut starts, a socket wrench with extension should be used
to tighten the assembly. Be sure to place enough appropriate bedding under
the fitting to prevent leaks.
