David, You were right. The shear pin was broken. That certainly explains
why I couldn't motor away from the rocks. I have no idea how it got
broken in the first place though.

I am beginning to regret my choice of subject caption "capsize". It
gives an erroneous impression, much more heroic than the actual
incident. What actually happened was that I tried to push the boat away
from the rocks (the bow was banging up against them), I didn't remember
in the heat of the moment that the keel was now UP, and there was next
to no stability available...it was my own weight that rolled the boat
onto it's side, at the same time dumping me in the water.
The mast got broken in the ensuing salvage attempts. After the boat was
towed back to the launching ramp (upside down), three men were
unsuccessful in their attempts to turn it over. It required a large
power boat pulling from the other side of the ramp before it turned. A
large power pump took an appreciable time to empty it to where it could
be put on the trailer. It required approx. a further 10 mins. to drain
most of the water through the bilge drain. The thought of doing it with
a hand pump is almost laughable.
