How about a second set of gudgeons mounted a few inches either side of the
originals? That way you could use the factory mast crutch to support the
mast, and still have the rudder available. I have had similar needs in the
past while trying to position the boat under a sling-type launch near here.
The marina staff insists that we lower the mast about 100 yards from the
sling and then moter to it to avoid inconveniencing the power boat crowd. I
haven't made this modification, but it might be one answer (more holes in
boat, however).
