I was almost correct on my description of the hull number breakdown. The
last 4 places (using my number for illustration)...HMSA2357J899 "J8" is
allocated by the DMV, and "99" refers to year of manufacture. In my
case is was very tempting to think that "J8" was code for "January 8th."
,since my boat was built in early January, but that is NOT the case
according to Glenn at IM. (This holds together when you realize that "J"
could also represent June and July. Soooo, everything is
straightforward except for the "J8" bit...nobody seems to know what that
is code for.....
