Hello Websters-
I am happy to report that the second annual Sail for CFIDS voyage from =
NJ to Washington DC was a success. Originally we planned to launch from =
Atlantic City on May 1, but a strong Atlantic high pressure system sent =
20 knot Northeasterlies whistling down the coast and causing small craft =
advisories to emerge. Instead, we trailered the Nightingale over to the =
Cohancey River, which leads directly into the Delaware Bay. Our first =
night was spent in the glow of the Salem Nuclear Reactor, as we absorbed =
our yearly rad dose. I wonder if navigation lights are required that =
close?

The next few days were spent navigating the Chesapeake and Delaware =
Canals. We overnighted at Hawk Miller Island State Park one night, and =
at the Mears Annapolis the next. While the weather was beautiful, the =
winds were light and we spent large parts of the afternoons motoring. =
However, a good breeze seemed to kick up at around 4 pretty regularly, =
so we were able to approach our overnights with a little style. Fog =
troubled the voyage after Annapolis (thank goodness for the GPS) until =
we reached the mouth of the Potomac on the 7th of May. The weather =
cleared (save for a brief rain squall) and westerly winds picked up for =
some fine sailing. Hull speed was easily reached under reefed main and =
partially furled Genoa.=20

I and my crews greatly enjoyed the voyage and appreciated the sailing =
qualities of our little WWP19. We raised almost $5000 last year for =
research into a cause and cure for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and I hope =
we can do better this year. While I was in Washington I joined the =
lobbying efforts of the CFIDS Association of America, visiting the =
offices of my senators and representatives from NJ. There we were =
talking about real money.=20

wwp 19 Florence Nightingale
(Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing during the Crimean =
War, spent 30 years of her life bedridden with an illness very similar =
to CFS. I feel another connection to her in that she did her pioneering =
work at the hospital in Scutari, in Istanbul. I was born and lived for a =
brief period just down the hill from the hospital on the Asian side of =
the Bosphorus, where I also did my first sailing with my Dad).
