With regard to a roller furling main, see http://www.marley.net/dw3.htm

Sail slugs and lazy jacks work well for me. I can also haul the boom higher
by attaching the halyard to the gooseneck and hoisting, using the adjustable
topping lift to keep the aft end of the boom higher than normal. Keeps the
cockpit very clear.
