I'm with Bill on this. If I understood the original question correctly, the
answer is that the P19 design didn't feature a backstay originally, and the
aft location of the shrouds provide aft vector to offset the headstay pull.
Kelpie's untapered spar section would be a bear to bend - I too am leery of
putting that much tension - especially since you can achieve much of the
same sail shaping by raking the mast aft, which is easy if you leave out
the forward pin of the tabernacle.
