Yes it is supposed to stick out. I made a short bun gee, with small S hooks on
each end. this goes through the hole in the end of the big batten and the S
hooks hook on each side of the sail to keep tension on the batten. Also tie a
small line through the batten and the sail grommet to keep form loosing same.
