David,
1-I positioned slugs at equal distance from the reef cringle
to give some slack.
2-I had IM set up for jiffy reefing and among other things
they put an eye-strap on the mast and a cleat on the other
side; a line goes up from the eye-strap, through the reef
cringle and down to the cleat.
To reef I loosen (some) the main halyard pull the reef line
down and make if fast. The couple slugs below the reef
cringle just bunch up and help flake the mainsail.
