Mike,

I have thought about this but I settled for a simpler solution. I have
one of those dry wallet things. Its a waterproof nylon bag on a waist
band, made so you can take your valubles in the water with you when
you're snorkeling or surfing. I stick my wallet, cell phone and keys in
it and then loop the waist band around the cockpit rail a few times and
clip it. Works great.

On a similar note, I have considered putting a larger storage
compartment, like gas tank size under one of my cockpit seats. This
would require sawing a piece of the seat loose, hinging it and mounting
a box of some sort under it. I would be glad to sacrifice a foot or so
at the base of one of my quarter berths for the added cockpit storage.
Has anyone out there tried this?
