Registration sticker removal

Hello. I have a couple of different boats that I need to change the
registration stickers on. I recently used a penknife to remove some of
the letters, because that was all I had available at the time. When I get
back out to the boats, I would like to finish the changeover.
What do you use to remove both the stickers, and the old glue underneath?
Do you use a razor blade, and follow up with fingernail polish remover, or
do you use something else (like the "Goo Gone" stuff you see in stores)?
