snip... it just seems slow when you are going downwind because of the
drop in relative wind. It's easy to be lulled into a false sense of
security; then you come about and ...Whoa Nelly! Where did all that wind
come from? ...snip
Absolutely! Or as we used to say in the Army "Abso-expletive
deleted-lutely"!
My wife and I were out on the Potomac last Sunday and we tacked down
river several miles and the did a dead down wind run to get home. The
wind going down river was nice -- probably 10-12 MPH. As we returned up
river to get back home, I summoned my wife from her nap below to see the
nice wake we were putting up -- we even had a little following wave like
the big boats. I didn't think anything about it. Then we passed
several police boats and an overturned Newport 17 --- and I didn't think
anything about it. Then we made the left turn into the marina - Whoa
Nelly! I was able to get into the lee of the marina inlet with some
struggle, but it was exciting for a while. I checked weather
underground (http://www.weatherunderground.com/ ) wind history for the
afternoon and it said that there were gusts of 25+ MPH at the time.
Lesson learned -- but, boy, were we flying!
