Jeff,

I'm very sorry to hear about your woeful event. My first recommendation would
be to add a bit of extra weight low in the boat and forward. At 250 lbs your
weight will need to be counterbalanced to get any speed at all out of your
Potter. Second, don't expect speed out of your Potter. This group is always
discussing ways to make them go faster, but in reality, the Potter is NOT a
go-fast boat. They were designed for lazy day sailing and overnighting in
places you want to leisurely explore (i.e. pottering). Your Compac 16 is a
great boat, and you can tweek the sail arrangement to make it sail a little
better. I'd seriously think before selling it. You're going to find out that
the Compac is a far more stable boat than the Potter since it is also much
heavier. That doesn't mean that the Potter is not a stable boat... stability is
a relative matter when it comes to sailboats. I've owned quite a few and they
are all different, and all have their strengths and weaknesses. There is no
such animal as a perfect boat for all applications. To become truly happy with
any specific boat, you must ask yourself, "What do I really want to do with this
boat?". When you've narrowed that down, you can then really begin to have fun.
By the way, your new home is an excellent place for either of your boats, but
the Potter will allow you to get much closer to shore in the tidal areas, while
the Compac will give you much better sailing in larger water expanses.

Hope this is of some help.
