I think the 12 - 18" placement on the jib might be a little too far aft. I
don't know if I have figured out the bast placement, but after looking at a
picture of a wing section starting to stall I decided to try to put my
middle pair of telltales near the "thickest" part of my jib's "wing
section". At Woodward, last week, I sailed next to a boat that had it's
telltales too far forward (6"?)and I could see mine stall well before theirs
did. Also, I prefer yarn to the flat telltales. Not only is it
cheaper,(free if you have the yarn and needle) but telltales made out of it
seem to react much faster to changes then the flat type. If you are nervous
about poking holes through your sails there are telltale kits that include
tape to attach the yarn to the sail.

If I start to feel a little bit better this afternoon (got a little virus) I
will go out and measure where I placed the telltales on HC's sails.
