A week or so ago i told you all of how i had found a ABI dome light for sail
at JSI for $12.79 or thereabouts. This is a dome light with a 20w halogen
main beam, and a 10w red secondary beam. The spdt switch chooses between the
two, plus has a center "off" position. The idea behind using red lights is
that they are effective for chartwork at night without harming your night
vision.

Anyway, I have it installed now. Installation in my 1988 P19 #461 could not
have been easier. At home I crimped on some connectors (barrell type)to the
lead wires, which would allow the lamp to be removable. Once at the boat, I
removed the old dome light, and crimped on the other connectors for the
source wires. I held up the old dome light base to the new one, and even the
mounting holes lined it perfectly! so i made the connection and mounted it.

It works well. The white is noticeably brighter than the old one, and the
red fills the cabin with a crimson glow. The lamp has generally the same
profile as the old one, but looks nicer IMHO, if only because the brass
isn't corroded as it is on the old one.

Later on we had a race (yet another duck dodge) and when it got dark I
switched on the red lamp. My single brother who was crewing with me
immediately said "dude, i love the sex lights man!". :) I tried to explain
to him it was a chart light, but I think among my crew his designation will
stick.
