Irwin,

I did exactly what you are suggesting, on a 22" sailboat I built in
1960's. It had a short laminated spruce mast and I cut the mast 3'
above the deck, added two S/S cheek plates
about 2' long, put two fixed S/S bolts in lower portion, one fixed "axle
bolt" into upper portion of mast, and lifted mast up and pinned the
final uppermost bolt in at launch time. Back stay stayed fastened all
the time. On a tall mast, the overhang off the back of the boat is a
problem for trailering. Ask Harry about a lanteen rig with tabernacle
and your idea! Sounds like a winner though!

My tabernacle was best at going under low bridges in So. Calif. harbors
(sailed with the El Toros in back bays!) and I loved it!. It also
worked great for boom tent camping in back waters of Morro Bay, CA.

Good luck!
