light wind? >>

Ken,

The Genoa is not only a massive improvement in light wind, it is an
improvement in the sailing of the P-15 in moderate winds as well. Once you
begin using it, I believe it will become your primary jib. About the only
time I don't use the Genoa is when it is going to be really windy, say, 20 to
30 MPH, or if I have company aboard and I don't want to deal with the lines,
etc. It's also a little more difficult to fold or roll and put away, in that
it is larger.

I haven't found any great way of cleating the Genoa. In a good wind, when
I'm out by myself, I run the sheets through the block on the genoa traveller
and back to the horn cleats on the aft corners of the cockpit. If you do that
with other's aboard, they will always be sitting on the lines and it is a
hassle. In that case I run the lines, try to follow me, from the clew of the
sail, through the block on the traveller, forward to a block I have installed
at the base of the shroud, and back to the cam cleats that are there for the
jib sheets.

This works, and it is easy, but it causes radical bends in the jib sheets
which can cause them to not release smoothly on a tack. As long as I help by
releasing and pulling on the "old" side when tacking, it's OK, but not what I
would consider an ideal arrangement. It was cheap, easy and required no
drilling into my precious hull.

Here's wishing everyone on the list a wonderful, safe and exciting
Independence Day. I, for one, will not be boating. I am spoiled by living at
Lake Tahoe, and do not wish to compete with the crowds at the boat ramp, on
the lake or on the road. I am leaving in a few minutes to go camping with
Dillon Dog along a river in No. Cal. That's our Independence!

Hopefully everyone will be having such a wonderful time, they'll not spend
too much time on the computers and I won't have too much E-mail to wade
through when we get home Monday night!

Adios!
