Boat trailer hubs are made up of bearings, a rear seal and a dust cover <not
to mention the hub casting, nut, washer and cotter pin, etc, etc>. When
bearing buddies or similar devices are installed, the dust cover is replaced
by a zerk fitting with a compression spring and a disc that has a small hole
that will ooze grease when filled. This small hole is not enough to overcome
the over-exuberant grease gun user. Grease should be added only until the
spring begins to compress. If overfilled the grease 'pops out' the rear seal
enough to ooze grease all over the inside of the wheel and in the process,
destroys the seal. Covers or 'bras' need to be put over the bearing buddies
to keep them from spraying grease/water all over your trailer and boat while
towing. It's a very messy job changing bearings/seals but can be avoided by
not overfilling bearing buddies.
