What a variety of responses!

I mounted mine above and to the right of the stove. This is out of the
way, near the stove, and most importantly - it doesn't result in bolts
in the cockpit. Everyone likes the spot where they can lean back
against the cabin to the left of the companionway.

I taped before drilling and didn't have any problems. I sealed the
screws with silicon. However, I did not mount the bracket! My bracket
is plastic and sure to break some day, so I mounted an oak block stained
to match my teak (would have used teak if I had had it at the time). To
this oak block, I mounted the plastic bracket/strap. In this way, if I
need to replace the plastic bracket, I can do so without undoing the
sealed screws.

Good luck.
