Reno Russ,

My Potter does not have the gin pole gizmo. I have NO problem
putting it up or down with one helper. Tie a line to the jib
sheet and take it forward and wrap it three times around the
horizontal rail of the pulpit
starting at outboard side and working towards centerline. Have
your helper pull the line taut. Then, when you release the
front stay (leave rest of stays attached) your helper is
holding the mast. When you are standing by the mast and ready
have your helper slack up on the line as you move the mast
down a little and then tighten up to stop the motion. Then
you can move further back and repeat the process.

In other words, Your helper holds the weight and you only have
the weight or just guide it for short periods as you move it
down (works going up also). I have done this many times with
my lovely, but not athletic wife and she finds no strain on
her and it makes it an easy job for me.

I decided I don't need a gin pole system unless I'm alone, and
the one time I was I had no trouble getting a helper. Someday
I may rig a gin pole but haven't thought it necessary.
