Depth of motor?

It just occurred to me (a bit slow, I guess!) that it
would be much easier to steer with the outboard if I
raised it up a bit (I can lower and raise the transom
mount) instead of having to steer back and forth with
the handle at about 45 degrees up to the aft rail. My
question is, how deep should the prop be to provide
adequate thrust? Does one angle on the motor give
more efficient thrust than another? I have a 5hp
Mercury long shaft on my P19. I find it fairly
difficult steering with just the motor and no rudder
(and maybe a foot of board down) when negotiating the
shallows. Not to mention submerged tree stumps! Any
other tips? Thanks!
