The wife and I finally got our P-19 on the water this weekend. My =
wife's sailing experience consists of messing around on her families =
sunfish and mine comes from crewing Catalina's on the Great Lakes over =
10 yrs ago. The weather in extreme NE Indiana was less than ideal for a =
novice first day. A frontal system moved through while we were on the =
water and wind gusts were measured at 32 mph at a nearby weather =
station. More than once we were hit by gusts that heeled us over 30 =
deg. or more before I could ease the main sheet. The wife would panic =
when we would start heeling (memories of the sunfish going over) and she =
got my attention first. Luckily our potter tended to us during these =
episodes and pointed up until the gust died down. After the third time =
(even I swore we were going over) I reefed the main and we headed back =
to the marina. Needless to say, purchase of the standard jib is on the =
top of my to do list<g>. =20

Questions-

1) The natural tendency of the boat to turn into the eye of the wind =
when excessively heeled was caused by the rudder stalling (my =
understanding of the mechanics)?

2) If a P-19 is knocked flat, does she right herself or will she =
capsize (just curious, I don't plan on ever finding out for myself<g>)?

3) Battens? The owners manual mentions them but we don't have any. I =
admittedly forgot all about it till we were underway.

4) We didn't receive snap shackles for the jib and main halyards and I =
was wondering what size/type to get? Is there any reason why a snap =
shackle couldn't be used on the outhaul?

5) I'm curious if anyone leaves the 3 short reefing lines permanently =
installed on the main? I would think they would flap around and chaff =
the main but I've been wrong before!

6) Has anyone rigged a variation on the keel winch system which allows =
you to get the cable up out of the way after the keels lowered? Mind =
sharing the details of this system with me?

I hope everyone else had fair winds this weekend!
