I think the main advantage of the jib boom is that it is self-tacking. You
don't have to mess with the jibsheets on each tack. Very nice if you have
to tack up a channel. I sometimes use a jib boom on my P14, which does not
have a mast-overlapping jib like the P15s.

The jib is probably a little less efficient with the boom.
