I have read with interest commentary on trailer bearings, including
the advice that bearings should be repacked before each 100 mile
trip. I certainly don't want to throw cold water on such sound
advice, but my experiences have been somewhat different. We purchased
"Tinker" our 1992 P-15, Third hand in winter,1997.
It had been used in Naragansette Bay mostly, so the trailer had
Naragansette immersed countless times in salt water. The owner
said that he religiously greased the hubs, via bearing buddies,
each time before he launched. It survived the trip home to western
New York (700 miles). That spring we took the boat to Florida
and back (2600)miles, as we have done for the past three years.
This year, as we estimated there were 10,000 miles on the tires,
we repalced them. We had never repacked or replaced the bearings,
but replaced always check the temperature of repacked hubs at
gas stops. When I jack up the trailer, before each trip, I check
to see that the wheel turns easily and that is do
