I usually bungee it to the aft end of the mast raising system, i.e., where I
attach it to the Halyard. It seems to really work well. If you want to
arrange a time to come on over, we can do it in my driveway and talk about
modifications, etc.

When raising the mast, what do you do with the CDI reefing spool to
protect it from falling off the deck other than have someone track it
as it moves aft? Tie it to the line raising the mast?
Obviously I had a little accident as my spool fell to the ground
because I wasn't paying enough attention to its position.
