Paul,
I just grab onto the furled sail at the same time as the mast when I raise
mine. I do the saem when lowering as well. If you can't grab both, you can
always keep it between your body and the mast with one arm on either side.
If nothing else your arms act as a sideways lazyjack (?) to keep it from
falling all over the place. It works for me anyway. Personally, I wouldn't
want to tie it to the mast before raising it, as then you have the problem
of untying it while holding the mast up. As for me, the less I have to
contend with while rigging the better.
